2011 SURF HIGHLIGHTS

Seventy-six talented young scientists from near and far presented their summer research projects at the Fourteenth Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fest at UMBC on Wednesday, August 10, 2011. From analyzing the potential link between feelings of anger and the development of cardiovascular disease to experimenting with techniques that may assist surgeons in removing tumors by indicating differences between cancerous and normal tissue, a variety of topics were presented by students and/or programs affiliated with the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. All oral and poster presentations were given on the Seventh Floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library at UMBC. Many UMBC faculty and invited guests attended the conference to learn about the student research projects conducted over Summer 2011. Our summer researchers garnered support from a variety of sources, including UMBC, UBM, the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, the Compurter Research Association’s Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Resaech, MARC U*STAR, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Science Foundation’s Interdisciplinary Program in High Performance Computing, NIH, NSA, the Summer Biomedical Research Training Program, FASEB, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the Leadership Alliance, and the UMBC Graduate School.

Thirty-seven dedicated 2011 Summer Research Mentors along with numerous post docs, graduate students and experienced undergraduate researchers, were honored for their ongoing support of student research and their willingness to invest their time and resources in mentoring summer research students.
